Background:
Climate Change, defined as the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans, has become a major concern amongst leaders worldwide. In common usage, the term “climate change” refers to recent temperature changes and implies a human influence. The detailed causes of the recent warming remain an active field of research, but the scientific consensus is that the increase in atmospheric greenhouse gases due to human activity caused most of the warming observed since the start of the industrial era.
One of the most observed atmospheric greenhouse gases causing climate change is carbon dioxide, or CO2. Currently, the 700 million cars on the world's roads produce 2.8 billion tons of CO2 annually. This represents 20% of the world's CO2 emissions. In response to the overwhelming evidence of mankind’s role in the recent environmental change, society has created emission standards, defined as requirements that set specific limits to the amount of pollutants that can be released into the environment. Unfortunately, only a portion of the world’s leaders are willing to implement these emission standards ant the CO2 being released into the air is still increasing exponentially every year.
